Over the last few weeks, the students have been hard at working learning how to write a paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. They also learned that in order to make a paragraph, you have to include detailed sentences with descriptive language. We started with skeleton sentence that only had a subject and verb, like "the boy ran." Then to enhance their writing, the students then turned that basic sentence into fantastic a sentence with adverbs and adjectives, like this: "the young boy scurried through the dark and abandoned hall to hide from the stranger chasing him." Once we were done this, students then choose a picture out of a picture book and created their own fantastic sentences based on the picture. This sentence then became their topic sentence for the paragraphs they wrote. Using oil pencils, they drew what their paragraph was about. Very impressive, grade 4s!
